How is Help providing support in Gaza?

Emergency aid for families in Gaza

In cooperation with our partner organization, we provide urgently needed emergency aid for people in Gaza. Our mobile kitchen is currently distributing 4,000 hot meals to affected families in Gaza, feeding around 12,000 people. We are also strengthening medical care in the Gaza Strip by bringing first aid kits and other medical supplies across the border.

In Cairo, we support Palestinian families who have been able to flee the Gaza Strip. Our focus is on psychosocial support for children so that they can cope with and process their traumatic experiences. We also care for breastfeeding and pregnant women and provide them with supplies for their babies.

In the first few months after the escalation of the Middle East conflict, we worked with a partner organization to transport 8,450 food parcels across the Egyptian border into the Gaza Strip. The parcels contained protein-rich food such as beans, canned meat and feta, which could be prepared quickly and easily and fed a family of five for a day.

What is the situation like in Gaza?

Famine in the Gaza Strip

The situation in the Gaza Strip is catastrophic: the area is one of the most densely populated in the world. Over two million people live here on 365 km². Since the escalation of the Middle East conflict in October 2023, over 40,000 people have died, according to the Gaza Strip health authorities.

9 out of 10 people in the Gaza Strip have been displaced at least once since then. 60% of homes have been destroyed and the electricity and water supply has collapsed. The majority of people have lost their homes and all their possessions.

In addition, almost the entire population of Gaza is suffering from hunger as there is not enough food. The United Nations speaks of a spreading famine: according to the Gaza health authorities, at least 34 children have died of malnutrition since October 7, mainly in the north of the Gaza Strip.

Healthcare is also suffering greatly from the effects of the Middle East conflict: hospitals are completely overloaded and there are repeated attacks on medical facilities. There are not enough medicines and medical supplies. In August, the first polio infection in 25 years was discovered in a small child.

Humanitarian aid is urgently needed, but is severely limited. According to the United Nations, 500 trucks of aid are needed every day to meet the basic needs of Gaza's population. In July, the average was 98 trucks per day.

We are very concerned about the humanitarian situation in the Middle East. All hostages must be released and their lives protected. The safety of the civilian population on both sides and the work of humanitarian aid workers must be guaranteed.

The situation in the Gaza Strip is extremely difficult and stressful for children. The ongoing humanitarian crisis and escalating military conflicts have made the situation considerably worse. UNICEF describes Gaza as “the most dangerous place in the world for children”.

According to the UN, around 90% of Gaza's population is currently displaced, including many children. In cities such as Rafah, children live in overcrowded, improvised shelters in extremely poor conditions. Access to clean water, adequate food and medical care is severely restricted. Thousands of children suffer from malnutrition and disease, and many have no access to necessary medical treatment. Humanitarian aid is urgently needed.

The psychological and physical impact on the children is devastating. Many children are injured, traumatized or have chronic illnesses and disabilities. There is a lack of basic services such as education and psychosocial support, further worsening the long-term prospects for these children.

There are currently 2.2 million people living in the Gaza Strip. One million of them, around half, are children. 346,000 of them are children under the age of five.

According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, 41,206 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the escalation of the Middle East conflict, including 11,355 children. 95,337people have been injured.

The Gaza Strip is currently the deadliest place in the world for humanitarian aid workers. Due to the ongoing conflict, there is a high risk of airstrikes, which severely jeopardises security. In 2023, more aid workers were killed than ever before. In the Gaza Strip alone, 163 people lost their lives during aid missions.

This sad record is likely to be broken in 2024: By mid-September 2024, 138 humanitarian aid workers had been killed in the Gaza Strip.
