How is Help providing assistance in Libya?

Emergency aid after the floods in Libya

Immediately after the flood disaster, Help, in cooperation with local partner organizations, initiated emergency aid for those affected by the floods. Together, we provided over 8,000 people with food, hygiene articles, medicines and relief supplies.

Even one year after the disaster, we are not abandoning the people: we are currently supporting 10 local civil society organizations that are committed to helping those affected by the floods, for example by providing food and medical aid. We are also providing psychological support for around 600 survivors.

Women have been particularly hard hit by the disaster. Many have lost their homes, husbands, families and children. Help supports women and young people in achieving financial independence through vocational training and income-generating measures.

What is the situation in Libya?

Floods in Libya

On September 10, 2023, severe storms hit Libya as a result of storm “Daniel”. Two dams in the north-east of the country were unable to withstand the rainfall and burst. The resulting flood disaster left a trail of destruction in its wake. The port city of Darna was particularly badly affected, with entire districts being washed away by the masses of water.

At least 5,923 people lost their lives and thousands are still missing. In the weeks following the floods, countless people also had no access to drinking water as many water sources were contaminated. Around 44,000 people lost their homes in the disaster.

High poverty and transit country for migrants

Libya is in the midst of a severe humanitarian crisis and is characterized by political instability. From 2011 to 2020, a civil war raged in the North African country, as a result of which countless families lost their homes and were displaced. Despite a ceasefire, armed clashes continue to occur.

The economic situation in Libya is very tense. Many people are unemployed and live below the poverty line, which makes access to food and medical care difficult. Children and women are particularly at risk. In addition, there are currently around 700,000 refugees and migrants living in Libya, for example from Niger, Chad and Sudan, who are looking for better living conditions.
